Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Grace Obama Chiumia, has advised officials at Netball Association of Malawi to step down after observing some issues in the body.
The issue was raised on Saturday, at Blantyre Youth Centre where Kukoma Diamonds were crowned champions of this year’s Presidential Netball Cup.
Chiumia’s statement came after noticing that Mwawi Kumwenda was not formally recognised at the event, a thing which made her [Chiumia] feel there is something of a political nature that is happening in the nation’s netball mother body.
“This is my second time in this ministry and before I was here, there were issues to do with politics whereby leaders are trying to pull down these girls as there are some girls whom they favour.
“We need to recognize her, she is our pride and our celebrity.
“Those that are politicising sports let them resign,” she pointed out.
However according a report on a local online media, NAM president Khungikire Matiya, said there is nothing of a political nature in the body.
She said: “Let me assure the nation that Mwayi Kumwenda is our girl, she is a person that everybody looks up to. There is no politics at NAM and everything is okay, we are working as an association towards the development of netball in Malawi.”
Kukoma Diamonds were given K4 million and a trophy after beating Blue Eagles Sisters in the final by 37 to 35 baskets, and the Eagles pocketed K2 million as runners-up.
