Flames coach Ronny Van Geneugden and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) leadership has been summoned by parliament to clarify issues pertaining to the national team’s poor performance as per petition by anxious football fans.
The petition was yesterday presented to the Parliamentary Committee on Social and Community Welfare through Dowa North Member of Parliament (MP), Enos Chitatanga.
According to a statement made by Chitantanga at the August House, the petition seeks clarification on three major issues; poor performance of the team, FAM’s incompetence on management of funds and transparency on recruitment of national team coaches.
“They have since asked that the committee needs to be meeting FAM leadership on quarterly basis to demand progress of the national team. The other request is government National Audit Office should be auditing FAM accounts.
“We have heard the concerns of the concerned football supporters. What is remaining is to meet FAM leadership and the national coach,” he said in an interview according to a local newspaper.
The Chairperson of the committee, Richard Chimwendo Banda, came up with a conclusion on the day by announcing that in January it will call upon FAM and the Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development for a hearing.
Meanwhile, RVG’s tenure has seen the team win only two matches, drawing ten times and losing eight times, and he has also failed to take the team to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
