The potential of Gabadinho Mhango to win South Africa’s Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL) Golden Boot Award can be compromised if Coach Gavin Hunt continues not to feature him in squad regularly.
Mhango would have been reading this Golden Boot race if Bidvest Wits coach did not have a tendency of not featuring him in best XI despite being the club’s leading top scorer with nine goals.
However, coach told the media in South Africa recently that he will be rotating his squad.
Mhango, who has nine league goals, four behind leading scorer, Lebohang Manyama of Cape Town City, played for 46 minutes on Saturday when Wits defeated Maritzburg United 1-0.
However, the Flames forward was dropped from the playing squad when Wits lost 3-1 to Free State Stars on Wednesday night.
With three games to go, Wits top the 16-member table with 57 points from 28 games.
Defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns have 55 points from similar number of games.
He said it was all to do with the coach’s tactical approach to games.
“My intention was not really to win the top goal scorer award but to help the team grab the league championship. If all goes well, we will win the title this season. Much as I am not happy for being reduced to the bench and sometimes as a civilian, I am just looking forward to the remaining games,” Mhango explained.
“Actually, the coach is featuring players according to his game-plan, so maybe I am not living up to his expectations, but it will be important for us to we win the league.”
