Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu has announced that he is hopeful that the Flames will stand a chance of making it to the 2017 Africa Cup Nations come 2017.

Nyamilandu made the remarks soon after after arriving from Cairo, Egypt where he attended the Caf Congress and the 2017 Afcon draw in which the Flames were paired against Guinea, Zimbabwe and Swaziland in Group L.

“It’s a fair group on paper better than previous groups. We need to fly from start and improve on our away record.

“We have serious competition from Zimbabwe and Guinea but we have seen and overcome the worst.

“So we need not fear. But let’s be bold and go for gold. That’s the prize,” Nyamilandu said.
Malawi last qualified for the Afcon final in 2010 in Angola under then Coach Kinnah Phiri.

However, Nyamilandu said the only setback was the Flames’ perpetual financial problems that often hinder the team’s preparations.
“That’s the critical ingredient,” he said. “But with God all things are possible. With or without, we have to qualify.

“We have come so close in the past and failed at the last hurdle. That experience should put us in good mindset.”

The Fam boss called for the coach to assemble a team that has self-belief.

“We need a team that has self-belief, ready to battle and achieve honours this time around. Nothing short of glory. Failure is not an option. This is our time and the country is hungry for success.”
